What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS M50?
It takes Canon EF-M mount lenses: you can see the available catalog in Canon EF-M mount lenses. The usual kit lens is the EF-M 15-45 mm IS STM (equivalent to ~24-72 mm due to the 1.6x factor). Keep in mind that EF-M is discontinued and the native lineup is small (~8 Canon optics plus some third-party ones); with the official EF-EOS M adapter you can also use EF and EF-S lenses from Canon DSLRs.
Is it good for 4K video?
It records 4K UHD at 24/25p, but with two real limitations: a severe crop (which makes wide-angle and handheld vlogging difficult) and the loss of Dual Pixel AF, which switches to slower contrast-based autofocus and a softer image. Where it truly shines in video is in Full HD up to 1080/60p, with fast and reliable autofocus. If your priority is 4K, this isn't the camera.
Is it good for beginners?
Yes, it's one of the most recommended options for getting started. It's lightweight, easy to use, has a viewfinder and an articulating touchscreen, and offers excellent image quality for its class with the Canon color that looks so good in portraits. Dual Pixel AF makes focusing very easy in both photo and Full HD.
How long does the battery last?
It uses the battery LP-E12 and its CIPA rating is around 235 shots per charge, one of the weakest in its category. For a full day of shooting, it's worth carrying spare batteries. Also, the original M50 doesn't support USB charging, so you'll need the charger. When buying, confirm how many batteries are included and whether they're genuine Canon or generic (these perform worse).
Does it have image stabilization?
It doesn't include in-body stabilization (IBIS). Stabilization depends on the lens with optical IS, plus digital software stabilization in video that crops the image even more. If you're looking for stable handheld video, count on a lens with IS or a gimbal.
What should I check when buying it second-hand?
Ask for the shutter count and check the battery condition, since 235 shots per charge means many cycles. Check the articulating screen and viewfinder, common wear points on vlogging cameras. Confirm what's included: the lens and its mount, whether it comes with the EF-EOS M adapter (adds value), and how many batteries. If you can, test a long video recording to rule out overheating.
M50 or M50 Mark II?
They're almost identical in image quality: they share the sensor and DIGIC 8 processor. The Mark II (2020) only adds slight AF and video improvements (and streaming options). Since the Mark II usually sells for a bit more, consider whether the real difference justifies the extra cost; for photography, the original remains a very solid buy.
