It is not an action or sports camera, and it doesn't pretend to be. It is a tool designed for portrait, landscape, travel, wedding, and low-light photography, where image quality takes precedence over burst speed or tracking fast subjects.
Its 20.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor delivers files with good dynamic range and notable high-ISO performance for its generation, supported by a very sensitive central autofocus point (down to -3 EV) that works where other cameras of its era gave up. It was also the first EOS with built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, a pioneering feature at the time. In return, you have to accept its honest limitations: modest autofocus system (11 points, only one cross-type), 4.5 fps burst, shutter up to 1/4000s, fixed non-touch screen, and video limited to Full HD. What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS 6D?
It uses the Canon EF mount (full-frame), so it accepts the entire Canon EF range and third-party equivalents like Sigma or Tamron in EF. Note: it does not support EF-S lenses (those for APS-C), because they do not cover the full-frame sensor. You can see options at Canon EF mount lenses. Due to the depth of the EF mount, it also accepts adapters for old manual lenses (M42, etc.).
Is the Canon EOS 6D good for video recording?
Yes, it records Full HD 1080p at 24/25/30 fps and 720p at 50/60 fps with H.264 codec. It has a microphone input, but no headphone output for audio monitoring, and no 4K (understandable for its era). For occasional video it suffices; if video is your priority, consider a more modern body.
Is it good for beginners who want to make the leap to full-frame?
It is one of the best options for that leap: lightweight body, full-frame image quality, and very good low-light performance. You must accept that its autofocus is modest (11 points, only the central one is cross-type), so for off-center or moving subjects, it's best to focus and recompose with the central point.
What battery does it use and is it easy to find?
It uses the Canon LP-E6 (Li-Ion, about 1,865 mAh), the same as many Canons (5D Mark II/III, 60D, 70D, 7D), so it is ubiquitous and cheap, in original or compatible versions. The CIPA battery life is around 1,090 shots with the optical viewfinder; Live View and active GPS reduce that figure considerably.
Does it have in-body stabilization?
No. The 6D does not have internal stabilization (IBIS); stabilization depends on the lens (Canon's IS). Keep that in mind when choosing optics if you shoot handheld in low light or with telephoto lenses.
Is it reliable to buy a used EOS 6D and what should I check?
It is a reliable and long-lived body. Always ask for the shutter count: ~100,000 is cited as a rough reference (not an official guarantee), and below ~50,000 there is plenty of life left. Check the condition of the battery (the menu shows its degradation), verify there is no front/back-focus by focusing with the central point, and check sealing, aesthetics, fungus on sensor/mirror, and that video and Live View work.
Do all 6D models have GPS and Wi-Fi?
Not always. The common version is the 6D (WG), with built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, but there is a regional variant 6D (N) without them. If you are interested in those functions, confirm it is the WG. Remember that leaving GPS active drains the battery noticeably.
