It is a camera designed for portrait, travel, mid-budget weddings and for the advanced amateur who wants to make the leap to full-frame without breaking the bank, as well as working well as a second body for a photographer already working with EF optics. What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS 6D Mark II?
It uses the Canon EF mount for full-frame, so it accepts all Canon EF optics and third-party equivalents like Sigma or Tamron in EF mount. It is not compatible with EF-S lenses (for APS-C), which do not cover the full-frame sensor, nor with RF lenses from Canon R mirrorless cameras. Being EF, you have access to a huge park of used Canon EF mount lenses, cheap and varied, which is part of its appeal.
Does it record in 4K?
No. The 6D Mark II records Full HD 1080p up to 60p (also 50/30/25/24p) and 720p, but it does not have standard 4K video (only 4K time-lapse). Various reviews describe its 1080p as somewhat soft and with little detail, and it also lacks a headphone jack for audio monitoring. If you are looking for serious video, this is not your camera; if video is occasional, it performs well.
Is it suitable for a beginner who wants to make the leap to full-frame?
Yes, it is one of the most logical options for that leap. The articulated touchscreen, Dual Pixel AF in Live View and ergonomics make it very accessible, and the full-frame sensor gives pleasant color and good high ISO performance. Just keep in mind that its dynamic range at base ISO is weak if you plan to edit shadows a lot in RAW.
Does it have in-body image stabilization (IBIS)?
No. The 6D Mark II does not have in-body stabilization. Stabilization depends on the lens (those with optical IS); in video there is a digital IS by software that crops the image. When buying it, do not expect stabilized image without a lens with IS.
How do I check the shutter count when buying it used?
The camera does not show the count in its menu, so you have to read it with third-party software (utilities like EOSInfo/ShutterCount via USB, or online tools with a RAW file). Always ask the seller for it. As a reference: less than 25k is like new; 25–50k is good condition with mileage; 50–75k moderate use; more than 75k heavy use.
How long does the shutter last and is it reliable second-hand?
A reference lifespan of ~100,000 shots is commonly cited, but note: that figure comes from forums and community, not from an official Canon specification, so take it as indicative, not as a guarantee. In practice it varies a lot (some die before 50k, others exceed 150k). It is a robust and sealed body, a good used purchase if you check its condition.
What should I physically check before buying it?
Check the sealing and gaskets, that the Dual Pixel AF focuses well in Live View, the hinge and touch of the articulated screen, the shutter button and that the sensor has no spots (take a photo at f/16 of a sky or white wall). Verify that the GPS and Wi-Fi connect with the Camera Connect app, and that the battery is genuine LP-E6N/E6/E6NH by checking its charging performance in the info menu.
To complete it, take a look at spare batteries, memory cards or cases.
