Successor to the legendary original 7D from 2009, it inherits its philosophy and takes it much further with a 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, dual DIGIC 6 processors, and a 10 frames-per-second burst that in its day placed it at the top of its generation. Its 1.6x crop factor "extends" telephoto lenses, so reaching long focal lengths is cheaper than on a full-frame body.
It is a tool designed to work outdoors: magnesium alloy body, high sealing against dust and splashes, and a 65-point autofocus system, all cross-type, which remains excellent for moving subjects. It is not, however, a modern video camera (it records only Full HD, without 4K) nor an option for those who prioritize maximum file quality in low light, which is the full-frame domain. For action, wildlife, and demanding field use, the 7D Mark II retains real value within the mature and affordable second-hand Canon EF/EF-S ecosystem.

What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS 7D Mark II?
It mounts Canon EF and EF-S optics, as well as third-party lenses (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) in that mount. It does not directly accept RF or EF-M lenses. Remember that, due to the APS-C 1.6x crop, a 50mm behaves like an ~80mm equivalent. You can see our catalog of Canon EF mount lenses.
Does it record 4K video?
No. The 7D Mark II records Full HD 1080p up to 59.94 fps, without 4K. Its great asset in video is Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which offers smooth continuous phase-detection focusing. Even so, for current video it is outdated (8-bit codec and no 4K); it is a camera designed mainly for action photography.
Does it have image stabilization?
It does not incorporate in-body stabilization (IBIS), which is normal for Canon DSLRs of its era. Stabilization depends on the lens: you will need lenses with Canon's IS mark (or its equivalent in third-party lenses) to stabilize.
What battery does it use and what is its autonomy?
It uses the LP-E6N battery, also compatible with the previous LP-E6. The CIPA autonomy is about 670 shots per charge with the viewfinder, a conservative figure that in real burst use is usually exceeded. It supports the optional BG-E16 vertical grip to double batteries.
Is it a good camera for beginners?
It is a high-end body oriented to action, with many controls and a highly configurable AF. A beginner can use it perfectly in automatic modes, but it truly shines for those who photograph moving subjects (sports, wildlife) and want to take advantage of the 10 fps and the 65-point system.
Is it reliable to buy a used 7D Mark II?
Yes. It is a robust magnesium body with sealing, rated by Canon for 200,000 shots, and many units exceed that figure well (user evidence, not manufacturer guarantee). The key data is the shutter count: below 50,000 is excellent, up to 100,000 good use, and above 150,000 high use.
What should I check when buying it used?
Check the shutter count (read with reputable read-only software or by asking Canon), the condition of seals, buttons, and bayonet since it is an outdoor camera, and the sensor looking for dust spots in a sky photo at f/16. Keep in mind that the built-in GPS continues to drain battery even when the camera is off if not disabled via menu. Also consider whether you have CompactFlash cards or will use only the SD slot, and confirm it includes original charger and battery.
