View warranty terms and conditionsThe OM System OM-1 (2022) is the flagship camera from OM Digital Solutions, heir to Olympus, and in fact it is the last model that still bears the name "Olympus" on the front of the body, as a nod to the 50th anniversary of the original Olympus OM-1. Do not confuse it with that legendary Olympus OM-1 from 1972 (a 35mm film SLR): this is a digital mirrorless camera with Micro Four Thirds mount.
Its big leap is the Stacked BSI (Live MOS) sensor of 20.4 MP with TruePic X processor: extremely fast readout, little rolling shutter, bursts up to 50 and 120 fps with electronic shutter and Pro Capture mode, which saves frames before the shutter release. Add to that a 1053-point phase-detection AF with bird, animal and vehicle recognition, an excellent IBIS (7-8 EV) and an IP53 certified sealing that is unusual.
It is designed for those who photograph wildlife, nature, sports, telephoto and travel in harsh conditions: the 2x crop factor turns a 300mm into a ~600mm field of view, with bodies and lenses much more compact than full frame. In exchange, to be honest, the small sensor performs below APS-C or full frame in high ISO and dynamic range. If you are looking for light reach and durability, it is one of the most complete M4/3 cameras of its generation.

What lenses are compatible with the OM System OM-1?
It uses the Micro Four Thirds mount, so it accepts the very wide catalog of Micro 4/3 mount lenses from OM System/Olympus and Panasonic, as well as third-party ones like Sigma, Panasonic/Leica or Laowa. It also supports old Four Thirds lenses via adapter, with some autofocus caveats. Remember the 2x crop factor: a 300mm performs like a ~600mm field of view.
I am hesitating between the OM-1 and the OM-1 Mark II. What are the differences?
The Mark II (2024) is a modest improvement: more buffer (longer Pro Capture and RAW bursts), Live Graduated ND, vertical video/webcam, improved AF algorithms with integrated human detection and somewhat better stabilization. The original OM-1 remains a very capable camera. The important thing when buying second-hand is to verify the exact name on the body and in the menu, not just the title of the ad, because many put 'OM-1' without further ado.
Is it good for video?
Yes: it records 4K UHD and DCI up to 60p and Full HD up to 240 fps for slow motion, with H.264 (8-bit) or H.265 (10-bit, 4:2:0) codecs. The nuance to be clear about is that 10-bit is only available in Log/HLG profiles, designed for color grading in post-production; in 4K/60p at 8 bits you have less editing margin. If you are going to do serious color grading, plan to work in Log.
Is it good for someone starting out?
It is a professional camera aimed mainly at wildlife, action and outdoor use, with redesigned menus that have a bit of a learning curve. A beginner can take advantage of it, but it is a high-end investment: it makes sense if you are attracted to light telephoto reach, high bursts and durability. Its stabilization and sealing make it very rewarding in the field once you master it.
Is it reliable to buy it second-hand?
Yes, it is a robust body with IP53 certified sealing. Many users shoot with the electronic shutter, which wears less than the mechanical one. As with any weather-sealed camera, it is advisable that the seals are intact and that it has not been opened or damaged. OM System has released firmware updates that improve AF and add features, so it is worth checking and updating to the latest available version.
What should I check before buying it?
Confirm that it is the OM-1 and not the Mark II or the 1972 film Olympus OM-1. Test both SD UHS-II slots, check the health of the mechanical shutter and IBIS, and check the condition and authenticity of the battery BLX-1 (relatively new and expensive). Verify the sealing and gaskets if it is sold as weather-sealed, and update the firmware to the latest version.
What accessories should it include?
From the factory, the OM-1 did not come with an external charger: it is powered and charged via USB-C, so many users charge only by cable. When buying, confirm exactly what it includes (strap, cards, charger if any) and whether it includes the optional vertical grip HLD-10, which extends battery life. The battery is the BLX-1; make sure it is original.
