Announced in August 2018, it succeeded the D3400 and closed the historic D3000 series before Nikon focused on mirrorless. Today it is available second-hand, which for many enthusiasts is an advantage: it is mature, well-priced, and offers a very competitive value for money.
It is designed for those making the leap to their first "real" camera: travel, family, learning. Its 24.2 MP APS-C sensor without a low-pass filter offers good sharpness and solid image quality for its category. The Guide Mode teaches you on screen how to manage aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and its battery life of 1,550 shots CIPA via viewfinder is very high for its class.
It is honest to acknowledge its limitations: it does not record 4K, has no touchscreen or tilting screen, no in-body stabilization, and its lack of an internal focus motor conditions which lenses autofocus. As a photography camera for learning and enjoying, it remains a highly recommended option; as a video or vlogging tool, it is not its territory.

What lenses are compatible with the Nikon D3500?
It mounts Nikon F (DX) interchangeable lenses, but with a key nuance: the body has no internal focus motor. AF-S and AF-P lenses (with their own motor) and third-party lenses with built-in motors autofocus; older AF and AF-D lenses work only in manual focus. Is it suitable for video recording or vlogging?
For casual video, yes: it records Full HD 1080p up to 60p. But it has no 4K, no external microphone input, no tilting or touchscreen, and autofocus in video is slow. If your priority is creating content or vlogging, it is not the right camera; it shines as a photography camera.
Is it good for beginners?
It is one of the best options to start with. Its Guide Mode explains on screen how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO affect the photo, it is lightweight and comfortable, and its 24 MP image quality will accompany you for years while you learn.
How long does the battery last?
It is one of its great strengths: up to 1,550 shots per charge (CIPA) using the optical viewfinder, a very high figure for its class. In Live View and video, battery life drops significantly. It uses battery EN-EL14a; it is advisable to check its health, as many second-hand units come with generic batteries.
What should I check when buying a used D3500?
Ask for the shutter count as an indication of previous use; very high values reduce value. Check the sensor by taking a photo at f/16-f/22 of a white wall to detect dust or spots, ensure the screen has no dead pixels, and that the grip rubbers are not sticky.
Does it have image stabilization?
Not in the body: it has no internal stabilization (IBIS). Stabilization depends on the lens, meaning whether it includes VR (Vibration Reduction) system. The usual kit lens, the AF-P DX 18-55mm VR, does include it.
Can I transfer photos to my phone?
Yes, via Bluetooth with the SnapBridge app. Note that it has no WiFi or GPS, and Bluetooth transfer is convenient but slower than WiFi. If this workflow matters to you, test pairing with your phone.
