At the time, it stood out for two things uncommon in its category: a fully articulated 3-inch LCD screen and manual video controls, making it a favorite among hobbyists and budget-conscious creators.
Its 18-megapixel CMOS sensor with the DIGIC 4 processor still delivers good results in sufficient light: large prints, room to crop, and full manual controls that make it ideal for truly learning photography. Its Canon EF mount opens the door to a huge catalog of EF and EF-S lenses, many of which are very cheap on the used market.
Let's be honest: it's a model from over a decade ago. It has no in-body stabilization, its high ISO is noisy, video lacks reliable autofocus, and it doesn't include Wi-Fi. Today, it makes perfect sense as an affordable learning camera or as a second camera, not as a professional tool. For taking your first steps in DSLR photography, it more than suffices.

What lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS 600D?
It uses the Canon EF mount, so it accepts both EF and EF-S lenses, with a huge and very economical catalog on the used market (the 50mm f/1.8 and the 18-55 IS are typical companions). Is it a good camera to start in photography?
Yes, it's one of the reasons it remains popular. It offers full manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and an 18 MP sensor that's more than enough to learn. Its articulated screen and contained second-hand price make it a highly recommended first DSLR.
Is it suitable for video and vlogging?
It records Full HD 1080p (24/25/30 fps) and HD 720p (50/60 fps), with manual control and an external microphone input, and its articulated screen helps a lot. The important limitation: it has no reliable continuous autofocus during recording (you focus manually) and no in-body stabilization, so it's best to use IS lenses or a tripod.
What battery does it use and how long does it last?
It uses the Canon LP-E8 Li-ion battery. With the optical viewfinder, it lasts around 440 shots per the CIPA standard; in Live View or video, battery life drops considerably because the sensor and screen consume more. It's advisable to carry a spare battery if you plan to record a lot.
Does it have Wi-Fi to transfer photos to the phone?
No. The 600D has no wireless connectivity or Bluetooth, so photos are transferred via USB cable or with an SD/SDHC/SDXC card reader. It's a limitation of its era to keep in mind.
What should I check when buying a used one?
Always ask for the shutter count: a very high number indicates a more worn shutter. Take a photo of a white wall at f/16-f/22 to detect dust or dead pixels, check that the articulated screen rotates without play, and that no mirror errors appear. Confirm that the battery holds a charge and that it includes the charger, body cap, and strap.
Is it reliable today despite its age?
It's a 2011 model that's been widely tested and is mechanically simple, so it's usually reliable if well cared for. Canon did not publish an official shutter durability figure for this entry-level model, so any number circulating is indicative, not a guarantee. A low shutter count and a good sensor condition are the best signs of a healthy unit.
