Its backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor in FX format with 45.7 megapixels and no low-pass filter extracts outstanding detail and dynamic range, especially thanks to its base ISO 64. It is an uncommon camera: it performs as a studio tool for landscape, portrait, architecture, fashion, and reproduction, but its 7 fps burst (9 fps with the MB-D18 grip) and 153-point autofocus inherited from the D5 make it equally capable for wildlife and sports.
It is designed for the advanced or professional photographer who wants maximum resolution without giving up versatility, and for those who value the optical viewfinder, the enormous battery life of a DSLR, and the robustness of a body sealed against dust and moisture. It also records 4K UHD video at 30p using the full width of the sensor. It is worth knowing that it does not include in-body image stabilization (IBIS): stabilization depends on the VR lens. Which lenses are compatible with the Nikon D850?
It uses the Nikon F mount, so it accepts the huge range of Nikkor F lenses. Modern AF-S and AF-P lenses work with full autofocus and exposure; older AF-D lenses focus because the body has its own motor, and manual AI/AI-S lenses work with metering. You can see our selection of Nikon F mount lenses.
Does it have in-body image stabilization (IBIS)?
No. The D850 does not include in-body stabilization; there is only electronic stabilization in video (with crop). Optical stabilization depends on the lens having VR. If you come from a mirrorless with IBIS, keep this in mind.
What battery does it use and how much battery life does it offer?
It uses the battery EN-EL15a (compatible with EN-EL15/15b/15c). Battery life with the optical viewfinder is excellent for its class, around 1,840 shots per charge according to Nikon's official data (approximate). In live view and video, battery life drops considerably.
Is it good for video?
It records 4K UHD up to 30p using the full width of the sensor (no crop) and Full HD up to 60p, with slow motion at 120 fps in 1080p. It is decent video, but basic by 2026 standards: no robust log profile and somewhat slow contrast-detect autofocus for video.
Is it good for beginners?
It is a professional high-resolution camera. A beginner can use it, but its 45.7 MP files demand fast cards, lots of storage, and a capable computer, and the high resolution punishes weak lenses. It is more suitable for those who already master exposure and want to grow without technical limits.
Is it reliable when bought second-hand?
Very much so. The shutter is rated for about 200,000 shots, and many bodies exceed 300,000 without issues. The key data is the shutter count: under 50,000 is excellent, 50,000–100,000 still has a lot of life, and up to 150,000 is moderate but reliable use. Maintenance matters as much as the number.
What should I check when buying a used D850?
Ask for the shutter count (read from the EXIF of a recent photo). Inspect the sensor for dust, scratches, or fungus, and test with a closed aperture against a light background to detect hot pixels. Check that the XQD/CFexpress slot works (often little used) and verify the accessories: original battery, charger, cap, and strap.
