It is a compact, fully metal body that combines aperture priority with full manual control: you choose the aperture or the shutter speed, and the camera follows with a very fine center-weighted TTL meter. It is the "with automation" sister of the mechanical FM2, designed for the advanced enthusiast or professional who wants agility without giving up control.
Its electronic focal-plane shutter reaches up to 1/4000 s and syncs flash at 1/250 s, notable figures for 1983; the first series mount titanium honeycomb-pattern curtains and later ones switched to aluminum. The pentaprism viewfinder shows two needles that compare the selected shutter speed with the recommended one, so you see the magnitude of the exposure error at a glance, not just whether it is wrong.

Which lenses are compatible with the Nikon FE2?
It mounts the Nikon F bayonet and perfectly couples AI and AI-S lenses with automatic indexing. AF-D lenses with an aperture ring work in manual and aperture priority. Note: modern AF-G and DX lenses (without an aperture ring) mount but do not allow aperture control, and IX Nikkor lenses should not be mounted. You can see options in Nikon F mount lenses.
Does it record video or have a screen?
No. The FE2 is a 35 mm film camera from 1983: it has no digital sensor, no video, no LCD screen, and no stabilization. The "resolution" and the result depend on the film you load.
What battery does it use and does it work without a battery?
It uses two 1.5 V LR44 button batteries (equivalent to SR44/A76). It is very dependent on the battery: without a battery it only fires at 1/250 s mechanically (M250) and in B, and the meter does not work. Always carry spare batteries. If you want total shutter independence, the FM2 (100% mechanical shutter) is a better option.
Is it good for beginners?
It can be if you are interested in learning: it has aperture priority to let the camera handle the shutter speed, and a very instructive two-needle viewfinder for understanding exposure. That said, it has no autofocus, no program mode, and no shutter priority, so you focus and compose yourself.
Is a 40-year-old second-hand FE2 reliable?
They are very robust and well-built bodies, but age takes its toll on specific parts: especially the light seals (degraded foam that lets light in) and the battery compartment due to corrosion from old batteries. Both are common and cheap repairs. A serviced unit will give many years of use.
What should I check when buying it?
Check that the meter responds coherently (the two needles), that it fires at all shutter speeds and that they sound different and correct, that the curtains are straight and without creases, and inspect the viewfinder (no fungus or prism separation). A good test of the mechanical backup: remove the battery and confirm that it fires at M250 and B.
What is the difference between titanium and aluminum curtains?
The first units have a titanium shutter with a honeycomb pattern and later ones switched to aluminum. In practice both work well; it is mainly a collector's detail and does not affect use.
