If the Z7 bet on high resolution, the Z6 was the generalist and versatile model: a mid-to-high-end full-frame designed for those who want a single body that performs equally well in photo and video. Its back-illuminated 24.5 MP CMOS sensor makes it especially strong in low light, generally better than the 45.7 MP Z7 thanks to its larger pixel size, and its wide ISO range gives it plenty of margin indoors, at concerts, or in night reportage. It is an excellent serious entry point to full-frame for travel, events, portrait, and documentary work.
Technically, it offers burst shooting up to 12 fps, a hybrid autofocus with 273 points covering nearly 90% of the frame, 5-axis IBIS stabilization (5 stops) —yes, the original Z6 has IBIS, despite the misinformation circulating— and one of the best EVF viewfinders of its time (3.69 million dots). In video, it records highly sharp oversampled 4K and allows 10-bit output with N-Log to an external recorder. Robust magnesium construction and sealed. What lenses are compatible with the Nikon Z6?
It directly mounts Nikon Z-mount lenses with native autofocus. You can also use Nikon F-mount DSLR lenses via the FTZ adapter: most AF-S and AF-P lenses autofocus, while older AF-D lenses without a motor are manual focus only. It is not a fixed-lens camera: it has interchangeable lenses.
Does the original Z6 have IBIS stabilization?
Yes. It has 5-axis in-body stabilization rated at 5 stops (CIPA), useful for both handheld photo and video. There is false information circulating that says the original Z6 does not have IBIS; that is incorrect. With F-mount lenses adapted via FTZ, IBIS works on 3 axes instead of 5.
How is the battery and battery life?
It uses the EN-EL15b battery (also compatible with EN-EL15a and EN-EL15c) and supports USB charging. CIPA battery life is modest compared to a DSLR, around 310–380 shots depending on viewfinder or screen use, though in real use it tends to perform better. We recommend buying it with one or two spare batteries.
Is it good for video?
Yes, it is one of its great strengths. It records 4K UHD up to 30p with highly sharp oversampled readout and Full HD at 120p for slow motion. Internally it records 8-bit; for 10-bit with N-Log profile you need an external recorder via HDMI. The screen is tilting (not vari-angle), somewhat less convenient for vertical vlogging.
Is it good for someone coming from a DSLR or starting in full-frame?
It is a serious and very balanced entry into full-frame. The grip and Nikon-like ergonomics feel familiar, the EVF is excellent, and the sensor is very forgiving in low light. Keep in mind it uses XQD/CFexpress cards (not SD) and a single slot, and that tracking AF is inferior to later generations.
Is it reliable bought second-hand and what should I check?
The shutter is rated at about 200,000 actuations, so 30,000–50,000 is considered low or normal. Always ask for the shutter count via EXIF, check the sensor for dust, scratches, or fungus (it is exposed when changing lenses), verify that the IBIS does not make strange noises and that there are no dead pixels, and confirm it is on the latest firmware version.
What is the difference with the Z6 II and what is that XQD/CFexpress thing?
The Z6 II adds a dual processor (better buffer and AF), dual slots (CFexpress + SD), and faster USB charging; if the second-hand price is close, it may be worth it. The original Z6 has a single XQD/CFexpress Type B slot: these are expensive cards and less common than SD, so confirm that the purchase includes a functional card and a compatible reader.
