The Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 arrived in early 2018 as a Micro Four Thirds mirrorless body with a rangefinder format: the viewfinder is in the corner and the design is compact and discreet, designed to go unnoticed. It is worth clarifying a very common misunderstanding: it is not the successor to the GX8, but a step above the GX85/GX80. It is a mid-range camera aimed at the enthusiast who enjoys street, travel, and daily use.
Its 20.3 MP sensor omits the low-pass filter to squeeze out a bit more detail, and it mounts 5-axis in-body stabilization (IBIS) that helps handheld shooting. The shutter was redesigned to greatly reduce the "shutter shock" that plagued previous models, and the silent mode with electronic shutter goes up to 1/16000 s. The tilting EVF is a distinctive feature of the series and facilitates shooting from the waist.
It is honest to say who it is not for: it has no weather sealing, no microphone input, and its continuous AF struggles with moving subjects. As a stills, street, and travel camera, however, it remains a very reasonable used purchase, supported by the extensive and affordable Micro 4/3 lens catalog.

What lenses are compatible with the GX9?
It uses the Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount, so it accepts the Panasonic and Olympus/OM System catalogs, as well as third parties like Sigma, Panaleica, or Voigtländer. Is it suitable for beginners?
Yes. It is a manageable mid-range camera with very good image quality and careful JPEGs. Single-shot AF is fast and accurate, ideal for stills. Its weak point is continuous AF with moving subjects, so if you are just starting out and prioritize street, travel, or static portrait photography, it fits well.
How is the battery and battery life?
It uses the DMW-BLG10 battery, the same as the GX85/GX80/LX100, very easy to find with cheap clones. CIPA battery life is around 260 shots with LCD, which is short, although power-saving mode can increase that figure significantly. It is advisable to carry a spare battery. Note: it charges via USB in-camera and does not always include a desktop charger, so check what the used unit includes.
How is video recording?
It records 4K UHD at 30p (up to 100 Mbps) and Full HD up to 60p, but with a crop in 4K, 8-bit, and no Log profiles. It also lacks a microphone input and headphone jack. It is more than enough for casual video and travel, but falls short for serious video work.
Is it reliable when bought used?
Yes. Precisely the GX9 mitigated the 'shutter shock' that affected previous models, so that issue should hardly concern you here. If you are worried about shutter wear, you can shoot in electronic mode to avoid using the mechanical one. If possible, check the shutter count (the lifespan figures circulating are indicative, not official Panasonic data).
What should I check when buying it?
Confirm that the listing is truly a DC-GX9 (20 MP, tilting viewfinder) and not a GX80/GX85 (16 MP) or a GX8, as there is frequent confusion. Check the sensor for dust spots (common in used MFT and easy to clean) and verify what accessories are included, especially the charger and whether the battery is original or a clone.
What is the 'rainbow tearing' of the viewfinder?
The EVF is field-sequential type, which can cause color flashes ('rainbow tearing') with rapid camera or subject movement. It is not a defect but a characteristic of that type of viewfinder design. Some users find it annoying and others do not; if possible, try it before deciding.
