The Sony Alpha A6000 (ILCE-6000) is an APS-C mirrorless camera announced in February 2014 that became a sales phenomenon: it was one of the best-selling and most popular APS-C mirrorless cameras of its time, and Sony kept it in its catalog for years, even after launching the A6300. That success was no accident. It combines a 24.3-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor with the BIONZ X processor and, above all, a hybrid autofocus system with 179 phase-detection points that Sony at the time touted as one of the fastest AF systems on the market. Add to that burst shooting up to 11 fps, a built-in OLED viewfinder, and a body that weighs just 344 grams.
It is a camera designed for the enthusiast who wants to make the leap to an interchangeable lens system without carrying weight: travel, street, portrait, family use, or as a first "real" camera. It lets you grow, because the Sony E mount has a huge range of new and used lenses. What lenses are compatible with the A6000?
It uses the Sony E mount. It accepts both E lenses designed for APS-C and FE full-frame lenses (these use the central area due to the 1.5x crop factor). With adapters, it also supports Sony/Minolta A lenses and other brands in manual focus. You can see the selection in our collection of Sony E mount lenses. One tip: the 16-50mm PZ kit lens is convenient but optically weak; many users swap it for prime lenses.
Does it shoot 4K?
No. The A6000 shoots at most Full HD 1080p at 60p (AVCHD or MP4). It also lacks a microphone input and headphone jack, and it has rolling shutter, so it's not the ideal choice for serious video. For photography, however, it performs more than adequately.
Is it good for beginners?
Yes, it's an excellent first system camera due to its size, fast AF, and image quality. The only downside is that Sony's menus from this generation are somewhat confusing and it only has one control dial, but you'll master it in no time.
How long does the battery last?
It uses the NP-FW50 battery, with about 360 shots (viewfinder) or 420 (screen) per CIPA standards; in real use, it usually ranges from 300-400 depending on Wi-Fi, cold, and screen use. It's modest battery life, so we recommend carrying one or two spare batteries. It charges via USB in the body.
Is it reliable to buy this camera used?
Yes. It's a very robust model and there's a huge used market. As a rough industry reference, for cameras in this class, shutter life is often cited as around 100,000 actuations, though Sony doesn't publish an official figure and it's only an estimate, not a guarantee. As a guide: under 10,000 is almost new, between 10,000 and 30,000 is excellent light use. Always ask for the shutter count, which can be read via EXIF.
What should I check when buying it used?
Check the shutter count, the condition of the OLED viewfinder and the tilting screen (dead pixels, that it's not loose), the real health of the battery, and whether it includes a charger. Take a photo of a white wall at f/16 to detect dust or spots on the sensor, and check that the firmware is updated. At Camera Market, every unit passes quality control before being sold.
Does it have image stabilization?
Not in the body (no IBIS). Stabilization is only available if the lens has it (Sony's OSS system). Keep that in mind when choosing lenses if you shoot handheld in low light.
