It mounts a 24.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor with an updated Bionz X processor, shoots bursts of up to 11 fps and records 4K with oversampling in 24p without the old 30-minute limit. What lenses are compatible with the Sony A6400?
It uses Sony E-mount and natively accepts all Sony E lenses in APS-C format, as well as FE (full-frame E-mount) lenses with a 1.5x crop. There is also a huge third-party offering from Sigma, Tamron or Viltrox. You can see options in our collection of Sony E-mount lenses.
Does it have in-body stabilization (IBIS)?
No. The A6400 does not include in-body stabilization; it depends on lenses with optical stabilization (OSS), present in many Sony APS-C zooms but not in most primes. If you come from an A6500 or A6600, which do have IBIS, this is the most important purchasing factor to consider.
Is it good for video and vlogging?
It records 4K with oversampling in 24p (good detail) and Full HD up to 120p, without a 30-minute limit. It has a 3.5 mm microphone input and a 180° tilting screen. But there are caveats for serious video: no headphone output (you can't monitor audio), noticeable rolling shutter in 4K, 8-bit Log profiles and the hot shoe blocks the screen in selfie mode if you mount a mic or light on top.
Is it good for beginners?
It is very capable and its autofocus makes life much easier, but it is designed more for the advanced enthusiast. The menus of this Sony generation are dense, the touchscreen is mainly for focusing (it doesn't navigate menus) and the ergonomics feel somewhat dated. With some patience with the menu, it is a great camera to grow into.
What is the battery life?
It uses the battery NP-FW50, with about 410 CIPA shots using the screen (about 360 with the viewfinder). In photo it usually performs much better in real use, but in 4K video it drains quickly. It charges via USB, so you can recharge it with a power bank; even so, it's advisable to carry one or two spare batteries, and be careful with low-quality replicas.
What should I check when buying it second-hand?
The shutter count on Sony cameras is not accessible in a standard way as on other brands (it usually requires third-party tools and is not always reliable), so prioritize the real condition: test that the shutter and AF work without issues, verify that the firmware is updated (it improved animal AF and thermal management), check that it doesn't shut down by itself due to heat after intensive 4K use, and inspect the battery health and the card and port seals. The typical lifespan of this type of shutter is often cited around 200,000 actuations, but that is an indicative figure, not an official Sony data.
How do I distinguish the A6400 from other similar models?
Don't confuse it with the A6300 (same sensor but worse AF and with a 30-min limit) or the A6500/A6600, which do have IBIS. Verify that the body is really the 6400. About accessories: it didn't come with a dedicated external charger from the factory (it charges in-camera), so it's normal if it's not included; make sure it comes with an original battery, cable and cap.
